love, love, love...

if there's any proof that the music of the beatles stood (and will stand) the test of time, it's the movie Across the Universe.

i'd like to give you a synopsis -- but you know what, it isn't even important... because the music is the story. even the characters' names (jude, lucy, max, prudence) are straight off the lyrics sheet of the fab four.

it opens with a few lines from "Girl"... then segues into a helter-skelter of movie images to the tune of, you guessed right, "Helter Skelter".

the movie progresses from there, with the 20-something Beatles songs included in the soundtrack arranged differently yet still essentially the same.

my absolute favorite is "With A Little Help From My Friends", the arrangement of which absolutely blew me away.

I also love their take on "Happiness Is A Warm Gun", and "Dear Prudence".

of course, fitting all of your favorite beatles song in one movie is virtually impossible, but there are hints of other songs here and there -- in the dialogue, musical arrangement, etc

the beautiful evan rachel wood (yes, Marilyn Manson's girlfriend) shines as Lucy Carrigan, complemented by the quiet performance of newcomer Jim Sturgess as Jude.

But the one with the best vocals is definitely Joe Anderson, portraying the role of Max Carrigan, Lucy's brother.

Oh, and there are cameos of Joe Cocker, Eddie Izzard, Salma Hayek (!!) and Bono (!!!!) too.

The movie is still showing at Glorietta 4 and Greenbelt 3 only, or your friendly manong Dibidi.

Directed and produced by Julie Taymor -- Across the Universe is a kaleidoscopic ride, a happy trip, a definite must-see for any Beatles fan.
